This is the first part of an article I wrote for the web site Microbiology, The Unwinding of a Microbe. This is the part of the article where the author discusses how automation in the lab can be used as a tool to study a microbial ecosystem.

This is where I get really excited about automation. The article discusses a few different ways in which our lab’s automated system can be used. Some of these methods are quite simple and I am looking forward to trying them out in the near future. One such method is called “autofac.” This is a technique where a sample is treated to kill some bacteria or other cell with a heat source and then the remaining cells are cultured.

Autofac has been around for a while. It’s used in many different ways but one of the most well-known methods using autofact is for bacterial ecology. Autofact involves growing cells that are grown in a nutrient rich medium such as M9. These cell cultures then are treated with a chemical that kills the cells. The remaining cells are then cultured and the bacterial community is studied using multiple techniques such as electron microscopy and 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

I find it interesting to see the different ways that the same technology is used and then how its used differently by different companies. Autofact is used across the industry, as a culture medium and for studying bacteria in particular. It is also being used in fields such as microbiology, immunology, and cancer, which is a field that many people are interested in, but very few companies have done much work in.
